A challenge

I have a confession to make, I love the camera on my Iphone. I have a lovely Canon DSLR, but there is something so nice and easy about having a reasonably good quality camera that fits into my pocket. I am currently going through a phase of taking photos of the same subjects on my phone and on my DSLR. To test this project I have included photos from both of my cameras on this blog. Can you tell which is which? Leave me a comment with your ideas.

Hint: 9 of the 23 photos were taken on my Iphone

  1. You're right, it's not as 'instagrammed' as I first thought! :P

I think you can still tell the difference between a phone camera and a proper DSLR. There are some examples above where the colours are just far richer, the depth of field far greater and the dynamic range way beyond what a phone can currently do.

I *only* use a camera phone. But I always have. I've never owned a dedicated camera. They're far better now than ever before, but a proper camera still beats them to a pulp when used right.

The advantages of a camera phone are obvious: a phone is always with you, while your bulky camera might not be. You can (should you wish) edit your photos on the spot, then share them to your blog, all on one device.

You can't easily control focus, although my Sony is probably better than most purely for having a dual stage physical camera button. Things like ISO and white balance are also not easy to control on a phone. Long exposures (e.g. for light painting) can't really be accomplished without specialist apps. Perhaps my biggest wish for a phone is the ability to store the images in RAW format to aid post processing.

Much of the above will come as camera phones improve, but a decent lens with optical zoom will be unlikely. Interchangeable lenses even more unlikely!

    Pros & cons. :)
